Peptides vs. prostaglandins

Almost every brow serum works through one of two mechanisms. They produce different results on different timelines, and only one carries a documented risk of changing the colour of your eyelid skin.

Peptide and prostaglandin formulas act on the same follicle, on different timelines.

In short

  • Peptides support the follicle; prostaglandin analogues extend the growing phase.
  • Prostaglandins act faster and carry the documented risk of eyelid darkening.
  • Either way, judge the result at sixteen weeks, not at four.

The two mechanisms

A brow serum can either support the follicle you already have or extend the phase in which that follicle grows hair. Peptide formulas take the first route. Prostaglandin analogues, borrowed from glaucoma medication, take the second. Everything else on a label — panthenol, biotin, castor oil, plant extracts — conditions the hair that is already there without changing how it grows.

That distinction matters more than brand or price, because it decides how fast you see a change, how long it lasts after you stop, and what happens to the skin underneath.

What peptides do

Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 and Myristoyl Hexapeptide-16 are the two peptides with the most published brow and lash data. Both are signal peptides: they bind at the follicle and appear to improve keratin expression and anchoring, which in practice reads as thicker, less brittle hairs that stay in place longer.

Peptide results build slowly. The first agreed-visible change usually lands between week four and week six, and the full effect needs a complete growth cycle. The trade-off is tolerance: peptide-led formulas produce the fewest reported reactions of any category.

Scoring note. Concentration and volume both matter. QUABROW ships 3.5 ml where most competitors ship 3 ml, and the manufacturer states one bottle covers around four months of daily use — which is why its cost per course came in lowest in the 2026 top five. Its formula pairs the two peptides with Ethyl Tafluprostamide, so it is not a peptide-only product.

What prostaglandins do

Prostaglandin analogues extend the anagen phase, so more follicles grow at the same time and each grows for longer. The effect is real and fast: visible density in four to six weeks is common. It is also conditional — stop applying and the brow returns to baseline within one to two cycles.

These actives sit in a regulatory grey zone. In several markets a prostaglandin brow product is sold as a cosmetic while the same molecule is a prescription drug at ophthalmic doses.

The mechanism decides how fast you see a change, how long it lasts, and what happens to the skin underneath.

Which to choose

If you want the strongest possible density for a fixed date, a prostaglandin formula gets you there faster. If you want a brow you can maintain for years without watching the skin around it, a peptide-led formula is the safer long-term commitment.

  • Sensitive skin, contact-lens wearers, a history of eyelid irritation: peptides.
  • Regrowth after over-plucking: peptides, given at least sixteen weeks.
  • Fast, temporary density for an event: a prostaglandin formula, with a patch test first.

Questions

Can I use a brow serum and lamination together?

Yes, but not on the same day. Lamination lifts the cuticle; applying an active immediately afterwards raises the chance of irritation. Wait 48 hours.

Does castor oil count as a growth serum?

No. It conditions and reduces breakage, which can make a brow look fuller, but there is no evidence it changes follicle activity.

How much product is one application?

One light pass along the brow line per side. Doubling the dose does not speed anything up; it only empties the bottle sooner.
